Sheriff Golding Announces Appointment of New Public Information Officer
(Harford County, MD) Harford County Sheriff R. Thomas Golding has announced the appointment of the new Public Information Officer for the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. Robert B. Thomas, Jr., of Joppa, has been appointed to replace Edward Hopkins in the office of Media and Public Affairs. Thomas, 52, will begin his duties with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office on November 7, 2005.
Prior to his appointment, Thomas served with the Office of the State Fire Marshal for 26 years, the last five serving as the Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal. During his career with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Thomas served for 14 years as Director of Public Affairs and Media Relations. Prior to his appointment as a Deputy State Fire Marshal in 1978, Thomas served in the patrol division of the University of Maryland Police Department at College Park for more than three years.
As Director of Public Affairs and Media Relations for the State Fire Marshal, Thomas was recognized by Frank Hall and Bishop L. Robinson, both former secretary’s of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, for outstanding performance.
Additionally, Thomas has received the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Meritorious Service Award, a Superintendent’s Salute from the Department of State Police, several commendations from the State Fire Marshal and a Governor’s Citation for exemplary service.
Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland at College Park and an Associate Arts degree from Allegany Community College in Cumberland. Following graduation from the University of Maryland in 1975, Thomas pursued graduate studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
In addition to his law enforcement background, Thomas has been a member of the Maryland fire service for nearly 30 years and has completed numerous fire service, emergency management and public safety courses at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Commenting on the appointment of the new public information officer for his office, Sheriff Golding stated, “We are very fortunate to have Bob Thomas join our team of professionals.
