Pedestrian Struck Fatal

(Havre de Grace, MD) — Harford County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a 12 year-old boy struck by a vehicle in front of his home earlier today. Deputies responded to the 4200 block of Rock Run Road at 2:46pm for a report of a child struck by a motor vehicle. Jared Werneke, 12, of the 4200 block Rock Run Road in Havre de Grace was struck by a 1989 Chevy pick-up driven by Donald Rudd, 66, of the 3900 block Rock Run Road, Havre de Grace. Preliminary investigation shows the child was riding a foot-powered scooter and reportedly came out of his driveway into the path of the oncoming truck.

Werneke suffered serious injuries and was treated at the scene by the Level Volunteer Fire Company and members of the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corp. He was then transported to Harford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstructionists were called to the scene to investigate and reconstruct what had occurred. Rock Run Road was closed for three hours while the investigation was conducted. As per agency procedures the matter will be fully investigated and then forwarded to the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office who will review the investigation and determine if any charges will be filed.
