Suspect Arrested for Falsely Accusing Deputies of Rape

(Harford County, Md) — Gail Marie Baucom, 36, of the 800 block Williamsburg Court, Edgewood has been charged with two counts of making a false statement to police for accusing two deputy sheriff’s of rape and sexual assault.

At approximately 1:15pm on July 13,2005 two sheriff’s deputies had responded to the Edgewood Shopping Center on Hanson Road to investigate several people handing out literature. While at the shopping center deputies observed Baucom nearby and knew her to be frequently wanted by police on outstanding warrants. Deputies learned she was wanted for failure to appear in court and was subsequently arrested on that warrant and taken to the Detention Center.

At approximately 11:10pm, while being detained at the Detention Center, she disclosed to a corrections supervisor she had been raped by police. She told officers the two deputies who raped her were the two that arrested her and that the rape occurred between 4pm and 5pm the previous day. Baucom was immediately transported to Upper Chesapeake for a medical examination and detectives were called out to investigate the matter.

During a follow-up interview with Baucom she admitted to police she made up the story falsely accusing the two deputies. She was subsequently charged with the offense and is currently being held in the Harford County Detention Center lieu of $3,000 bond.
