Deputy Dies in Line of Duty Motor Vehicle Crash

(Bel Air, MD - September 6, 2012) Harford County Sheriff's Office Corporal Charles B. Licato #553, age 34 of Cecil County, MD died in a single car motor vehicle crash that occurred in the 4800 block of Conowingo Road in Darlington, MD shortly after 2:00 am on Thursday, September 6, 2012.

Corporal Licato was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics from the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company. Corporal Licato had served the Harford County Sheriff's Office faithfully for 14 years. He was assigned to the Apprehension Unit of the Services and Support Bureau.

Sheriff Bane stated, "Corporal Licato died in the line of duty. Those who follow us in the years and decades ahead will know his name and the sacrifice he made for the citizens of Harford County. Corporal Licato will always be with us."

Incident Details

At approximately 2:30am, Harford County Emergency Operations Center received a call from a citizen who advised that there was a vehicle that was crashed on the side of the road. Moments after the call was dispatched a Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived at the scene and was able to determine that the 2010 Chevy Impala was a Harford County Sheriff's Office unmarked vehicle assigned to Corporal Charles Licato #553.

Through investigation and reconstruction by deputies assigned to the Harford County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, it was determined that the 2010 Chevy Impala was traveling northbound on Route 1, when it crossed the center line into the southbound lanes of travel. Continuing in a northbound direction, the vehicle traveled off the south bound side of the road, striking a steel pole on the front driver's side. The vehicle came to rest after striking two large trees.

It is undetermined at this time what caused the crash. A final cause of death will be determined by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Corporal Licato's family includes a brother who is a Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy and father who is retired from Baltimore City Police Department and Aberdeen Police Department.
