HOMICIDE - Suspect Arrested

(Edgewood, Md) — Harford County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of an Edgewood woman and have one suspect in custody charged with her murder. Detectives arrested and charged Frank Vernon Rainey Jr, 38, of 506 Barrymore Drive, Oxen Hill, Maryland with first and second-degree murder in the shooting death of Crystal Marie Busta, 36, of the 800 block of Fisherman's Lane, Edgewood, Md.

On Thursday, May 19, 2005 at approximately 1:20am Rainey entered the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office Southern Precinct telling the desk officer that he had shot his girlfriend. At the same time, members of the Sheriff’s Office Gang Suppression Unit had been patrolling the area of the Lakeview Apartments and just radioed in a report of shots fired in the 1900 block of Edgewater Drive, which is just several blocks away from the Southern Precinct. Deputies observed a dark colored import passenger car driving quickly from the area. Rainey told police his girlfriend was inside his father’s 2003 Nissan Ultima parked on the lot outside. When deputies went to check on the victim they found Busta slumped over the front seat. She was pronounced dead at the scene of a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies also recovered from inside the car a black semi-automatic handgun.

Detectives learned Rainey had been dating Busta for several months after meeting her over the Internet. Detectives believe Rainey was upset with Ms. Busta when she chose to end the relationship and subsequently shot and killed her. Rainey is currently being held in the Harford County Detention Center pending a hearing before a District Court Commissioner. Ms. Busta’s body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
