Suspect Arrested in Connection with Recent Homicide
(Edgewood, MD – October 3, 2010 – 7:00 p.m.) On Saturday, October 2, 2010 at approximately 8:54 pm, Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Clover Valley Way in Edgewood, MD 21040 for a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies observed a vehicle in front of the victim’s residence, which was located in the 1200 block of Clover Valley Way in Edgewood. The victim, who was seated in the driver’s side of the vehicle, had been shot multiple times in the upper torso and was unresponsive when deputies arrived. Shakir Derrick Wingate, age 16 of the 1200 block of Clover Valley Way in Edgewood, MD was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, by Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, where he was pronounced deceased.
Through investigation and witness statements, detectives were able to quickly identify a suspect in the homicide. With assistance from a Maryland State Police K9 trooper and his bloodhound, deputies were able to locate the suspect in his residence, just a short distance from the crime scene. A motive has not been determined at this time, but it has been established that the two young men had prior knowledge of each other. This does not appear to be a random act of violence.
Michael S. Jones Jr, age 18, of the 1300 block of Rainbow Way in Edgewood, MD has been charged with 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree assault and Use of a handgun in a violent crime in connection with the homicide of Shakir D. Wingate. Mr. Jones was transported to the Harford County Detention Center. He is being held without bail.
