Rescue Operations Suspended – Recovery Operation To Begin In Daylight

(Whiteford, MD) — Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputies will begin body recovery operations for a 37 year old Whiteford resident who accidentally drove his ATV off of the edge the Whiteford Quarry falling over 100 feet into the frozen water below.

Sheriff’s Deputies initially received the rescue call shortly after 1:00 AM to assist the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Department with the rescue of an ATV operator who had driven into the Quarry. With the assistance of the Maryland State Police Aviation Unit and Baltimore County Fire Department’s Advance Tactical Rescue Unit the fallen operator’s ATV was observed through the broken ice below with his hat on top of the ice however; the ATV operator was unable to be located. Due to the nature of the accident that involved falling over 100 feet and time expired since the accident Whiteford Volunteer Fire Department personnel suspended rescue operations and deemed the incident a recovery operation. Because of the extreme danger the recovery operation posed during dark hours it was decided the Sheriff’s Office Drive Team would resume recovery operations in morning daylight hours.
