Assault with Scissors / One Student Injured / 9 Students Arrested

(Edgewood, MD) — A 14-year-old Edgewood girl was injured today in a fight involving nine students at the Edgewood Middle School. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the school located in the 2300 block of Willoughby Beach Road in Edgewood at approximately 8:00am this morning for a report of a fight among students. Upon arrival deputies learned a 14 year-old student had been cut on the forehead with a pair of scissors by a 13 year-old student.

Deputies were told the assault resulted from a dispute between a set of five girls and another set of four girls. The dispute has been ongoing since early last Fall and is reported to have involved a dating relationship with another student. During this past weekend the dispute escalated when the girls allegedly made harassing phone calls to one another. The 14 year-old victim came to school today and had in her possession a pair of scissors. During the scuffle the scissors were alleged to have fallen from her pocket. The thirteen year old is then alleged to have cut the fourteen year old on the forehead. The fourteen year-old was transported by ambulance from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries and released. The thirteen year old was taken into custody and charged with first and second-degree assault, use of a deadly weapon, and disturbing school operations. The fourteen-year-old victim is also being charged with assault, use of a deadly weapon and disturbing school operations. The remaining seven students, ranging in age from 12-14 years old and students at the Edgewood Middle School, are charged with assault and disturbing school operations. Several students suffered minor injuries but only the fourteen year old required transport to the hospital.

The juveniles were all released to the custody of their parents.
