Bel Air Teen Dies as a Result of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

(Bel Air, MD – December 31, 2007) — Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash at 3:14pm on Sunday, December 23, 2007 on West Ring Factory Road near Somerville Road in Bel Air. Upon arrival to the crash scene, Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies worked diligently to rescue the two passengers from the vehicle. A third occupant who was seated in the rear of the vehicle was able to disentangle himself from the vehicle and walk away. All of the occupants were transported to John Hopkins Bay View Medical Center by ambulance.

The vehicle involved was a 2004 Isuzu Ascender. The preliminary investigation indicated that the car was traveling northbound on West Ring Factory Road at an excessive rate of speed not favorable for weather and road conditions. The driver lost control of the vehicle crossing over the double yellow line and eventually striking several trees.

The operator of the vehicle has been identified as Kevin Matthew Rutherford, age 17, of the 2200 block of Shetland Way in Bel Air. Rutherford succumbed to his injuries on December 28th 2007. The passenger in the front seat of the vehicle, a 17 year old male from Bel Air is now listed in stable condition, while the third passenger, also a 17 year old male from Bel Air, was released the same day as the accident.
