Deputy Sheriff Injured in Motorcycle Accident

(Bel Air, Md. – February 17, 2006) — Harford County Deputy Sheriff Richard Brooks assigned to the Court Security detail, was critically injured Thursday night in an off-duty motor vehicle accident near Daytona Beach, Florida. Brooks was injured when a drunk driver struck the motorcycle he was operating head-on shortly before midnight.

The accident occurred on Rt. 44 near Daytona Beach when Brooks and a friend, Ed Finchum, also of Harford County, were traveling westbound when a van crossed the center line and struck a car head-on and continued on into Brooks. The operator of the van was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol and was charged with felony drunk driving.

Brooks was transported to the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he was rushed to surgery for his injuries. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

Deputy Brooks has been assigned to the Court Security detail since March 30, 2002.
